Attorney Information
Overview
I grew up in the Midwest and left to attend Roanoke College. I returned to the Midwest for law school at Valparaiso University in Indiana but I really missed Virginia, so I returned to Roanoke after law school in 1995. I practiced with another law firm until September of 2004 when I joined OPN Law. I became a partner in the firm in January of 2006 and became the co-managing partner in January of 2007, and the managing partner in January of 2023.
I concentrate my practice in the areas of Social Security Disability, Virginia Retirement System Disability, Long Term Disability, Short Term Disability, and Personal Injury. I am a member of NOSSCR (National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives), VWAA (Virginia Women Attorneys Association), Ted Dalton Inn of Court, Virginia Trial Lawyers (VTLA), Salem/Roanoke County Bar Association, and the Roanoke Bar Association. I am a past President and Vice-President of VWAA and currently serve on the board of the Roanoke Bar Association and the Roanoke College President’s Advisory Board. I am currently President-Elect of the Roanoke Bar Association and will become President in June of 2024 and will have the honor of overseeing the year long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Roanoke Bar Association.
I knew I wanted to become a lawyer in third grade after watching a movie about the Civil Rights movement and because I have a natural flair for arguing. After practicing in various areas of the law, I settled on disability and personal injury cases because I can combine my love of helping people with my love of arguing.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
