Attorney Information
Overview
Charles Stone is an experienced criminal investigator, attorney, and United States Army veteran with more than 25 years of investigative experience and over two decades of legal experience. His career includes conducting complex criminal and administrative investigations, evaluating evidence, interviewing witnesses, analyzing legal issues, and working within multidisciplinary investigative teams at the state and federal levels.
State Law Enforcement and Investigative Experience
Stone began his career with the California Environmental Protection Agency in 2000, serving as an investigator until his retirement in 2025. During his 25-year career with the State of California, he handled complex investigations involving regulatory violations, enforcement matters, and potential criminal misconduct. His responsibilities included gathering and evaluating evidence, conducting witness and subject interviews, preparing investigative reports, reviewing documentary evidence, and coordinating with attorneys, regulatory agencies, and law enforcement personnel.
That background gives him a strong foundation for identifying weaknesses in allegations, evaluating witness credibility, recognizing investigative deficiencies, and developing evidence relevant to the defense.
Military Legal and Defense Investigation Experience
In 2007, Stone joined the California Army National Guard as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer. He deployed to Iraq in 2009 and subsequently served in military legal assignments involving complex legal and investigative matters. During his military career, he was selected to help establish the National Guard Bureau's Defense Investigator Program, an initiative supporting military defense counsel in the investigation of cases involving service members.
His military legal training includes the Judge Advocate Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Special Victims Counsel Course, and the U.S. Army's Special Victims Unit Investigator Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. This combination of legal training and investigative experience gives him a practical understanding of both prosecution and defense considerations, including evidentiary standards, investigative procedures, witness testimony, and the constitutional rights of individuals accused of misconduct.
