Overview
Steven grew up as the son of a logger outside a small town in Washington State. He received his B.A. degree from Stanford University in 1974 and his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1979. Before beginning his practice, he clerked for the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
Steven is one of the founders of Justice Advocacy Africa (JAA), a US non-profit that has since 2003 presented scores of trial advocacy training programs in Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Botswana training hundreds of advocates in each country. He has also taught at trial advocacy programs with the General Counsel of the Bar of South Africa. In addition, Steve has presented at many continuing legal education seminars for attorneys, has taught trial advocacy with National Institute for Trial Advocacy, at the University of Washington and Emory schools of law, and in China.
Steven has been selected for “The Best Lawyers in America” since 1995 and Washington State’s Super Lawyers since 2003. In 2012, the Washington State Association for Justice presented its Pillar of Justice award to Steven for the work of JAA in Africa.
