Overview
Sands McKinley, Founding Partner, McKinley Irvin
Sands is a founding partner of McKinley Irvin and the firm's managing partner. Together with his partners, they have built a firm focused on client service and care, professionalism, expansive legal knowledge and a strong infrastructure.
"At the heart and soul of this firm is a commitment to excellence in every aspect of serving our clients," says Sands. "Our motto is: 'Be more professional, be more prepared, be more fearless, and always negotiate from a position of strength.' It is not possible to work at McKinley Irvin if you do not share both this level of commitment and deep caring and compassion for our clients."
"Family law is extremely emotional," he notes. "The ante is high when it comes to children, property, and reputation. We act as our clients' sword and shield. We are as prepared for polite and meaningful negotiation as we are for a court battle. The overriding goal is the same in each case: protect our clients' interests and achieve their goals."
Before stepping out of active practice to focus on full-time management, Sands represented clients in over 200 contested family law cases. He also represented individuals in small and mid-size businesses in planning, formation, contract drafting and negotiation, and litigation matters. Clients included industrial contractors, trade associations, construction contractors, retail food service franchises, real estate investors and developers, information technology companies, and many others.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.
How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
