James White - Tacoma, WA

James has dedicated his career to criminal defense, with extensive experience in DUI and felony criminal defense. He has successfully negotiated thousands of cases to positive outcomes for his clients and has defended dozens in courtroom trials.

James' career began in 1995 at the Department of Assigned Counsel (DAC) in Tacoma, WA. In 1997, he moved to the Associated Counsel for the Accused (ACA) in King County, where he was quickly promoted to the felony unit. There, he negotiated and tried cases before the King County Superior Court, remaining undefeated in felony trials during his two-year rotation, despite seeking redress in the Court of Appeals. His public defense work, mainly focusing on DUI and domestic violence cases, continued through 2004.

In King County District Court, James was selected to serve as lead counsel for the Mental Health Court, a model for mental health courts across the country. He was recognized for his compassionate work with mentally ill defendants. In 2004, James returned to private practice in Tacoma and Pierce County, where he focused on DUI defense, including DOL hearings. His work in immigration law has made him familiar with the consequences of criminal convictions on immigration status, enabling him to effectively navigate these issues for his clients.

Born in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, a predominantly Mexican community, James was deeply influenced by his Mexican grandmother, Angelina Calderon. This family background helps him connect with and understand the needs of his Spanish-speaking clients. Now living in Tacoma, where he owns a home and his business, James takes pride in helping those who feel left out or who do not fully understand the legal system, ensuring they have a strong advocate on their side.

James’ wife was born and raised in Tacoma, where her grandparents built and sold homes. Together, they are committed to the local community. James has volunteered at the Tacoma nonprofit organization Centro Latino, and he has enjoyed coaching youth basketball and soccer on Vashon Island. He now lives in north Tacoma with his wife and French Bulldog “Charlemagne,” aka “Charlie. His two sons live and work in the Seattle area.
