Jason S. Newcombe

Founding & Managing Partner, Washington State Attorneys, PLLC

Jason S. Newcombe is an award-winning, top-rated Washington State Super Lawyer and the founding and managing partner of Washington State Attorneys, PLLC. A former prosecutor with more than three decades of courtroom experience, Jason holds a perfect 10.0 “Superb” rating on Avvo, which is the highest rating the platform offers.

He also maintains a perfect 10.0 Lawyer Rating on Justia, along with the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rating, the highest peer-reviewed mark for legal ability and ethical standards. The firm has also consistently maintained local offices in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, Everett, Olympia, and Tacoma for over 20 years. Jason also personally has over 300+ five-star reviews stretching back over 15 years now. Jason and his law firm have consistently been recognized over the last decade as a top law firm in the areas of criminal defense, DUI defense, civil traffic infraction defense, divorce and family law, and consumer debtor and bankruptcy cases.

The lawyers at Washington State Attorneys, PLLC have decades of combined legal experience in each of our primary practice areas. And, when you hire us, you are hiring a team of dedicated professionals that will fight to protect you and your family.

Jason and the lawyers who work with him have successfully resolved thousands of divorce, bankruptcy, family law, criminal, DUI, and civil traffic infraction matters, and over his career as a criminal defense attorney admitted in Washington, Jason has secured thousands of dismissals for his clients. He began his career as a prosecutor, trying his first case in 1996, which gives him an insider’s understanding of how the State builds a case, what resonates with a jury, and where a skilled defense can make the difference. He is widely respected by judges and peers alike as an aggressive, prepared, and results-driven advocate.

Criminal Defense

Jason is consistently recognized as a top-rated criminal defense attorney throughout Western Washington, and the firm’s criminal team has decades of combined experience. The firm handles all misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges and most felonies, in municipal, district, and superior courts across the Puget Sound region. Every case begins from a simple premise: no set of police reports is perfect, and every case can be challenged on some level. Jason and his team personally handle each stage: investigation, pretrial motions to suppress unlawfully obtained evidence, negotiation, trial, and sentencing, where they often prepare detailed mitigation packets that show the court the full picture of who their client is, far beyond what appears in a police report.

Representative criminal matters include:

  • Assault and domestic violence, including no-contact orders and cases built on false accusations
  • Theft, shoplifting, and property crimes
  • Drug and controlled-substance offenses
  • Criminal fraud and other white-collar matters
  • Minor in Possession (MIP) and juvenile offenses
  • Reckless Driving and Racing
  • Hit and Run, both attended and unattended
  • Negligent Driving in the First Degree
  • Negligent Driving in the Second Degree
  • Probation and community-custody violations
  • Record clearing and expungements to help clients move forward with a clean slate
  • DUI and Drunk Driving matters handled throughout Western Washington

DUI Defense

DUI defense is a cornerstone of the practice, and Jason brings a former prosecutor’s perspective, advanced DUI training, and membership in the National College for DUI Defense and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association to every case. The firm defends the full range of impaired-driving charges and knows where these cases can be challenged, from the lawfulness of the initial stop, to the administration of the field sobriety tests, to the maintenance and operation of the Dräger Alcotest 9510 breath instrument and the handling of blood draws.

A DUI arrest starts two separate cases, the criminal charge and a Department of Licensing action against your license. And, the DOL hearing must be requested quickly, within 7 days of arrest, which is why calling early matters. The firm handles:

  • First-offense and multiple-offense DUI, from misdemeanor through felony-level charges
  • Breath-test, blood-test, and refusal cases
  • Drug and marijuana DUI
  • Physical Control (being in control of a vehicle while impaired)
  • Boating Under the Influence (BUI) and minor (under-21) DUI
  • Commercial driver (CDL) DUI
  • Department of Licensing administrative hearings to protect driving privileges
  • Deferred prosecution and treatment-based resolutions where appropriate

Traffic Tickets

Washington State Attorneys is one of the region’s leading traffic-ticket firms, fighting civil infractions throughout the Puget Sound. A ticket is more than a fine: a committed finding goes on your driving record, can raise your insurance for years, and can threaten your license — and the consequences are far more serious for commercial (CDL) drivers and intermediate (teen) license holders. The firm’s goal is to keep the violation off your record entirely wherever possible. The firm handles all types of Washington traffic tickets, including:

Civil infractions:

  • Speeding, including speeding in a school zone or construction zone
  • Radar and laser (lidar) speed-detection tickets
  • Following too closely (tailgating) and driving too fast for conditions
  • Failure to obey a traffic control device, running a red light, and stop-sign violations
  • HOV / carpool lane violations
  • Unsafe or improper lane change, illegal turns, and failure to properly signal
  • Failure to yield, including failure to yield to emergency vehicles
  • Cell phone / distracted driving (E-DUI) citations
  • Red-light and speed camera (photo enforcement) tickets
  • No proof of insurance and registration violations
  • Overweight and commercial-vehicle tickets
  • Moving violations for intermediate (teen) license holders and CDL drivers

Criminal traffic offenses: Some “tickets” are actually crimes, not infractions, and require a courtroom defense. These include reckless driving, negligent driving in the first degree, driving while license suspended (DWLS), hit and run, racing, and DUI, all of which the firm defends as part of its criminal and DUI practice.

Divorce & Family Law

The divorce and family law attorneys at Washington State Attorneys bring decades of experience handling difficult and complex Washington State family law matters. The firm is particularly well known for high-stakes, complicated cases, including high-asset divorces, matters involving a small business or professional practice that must be valued and divided, and hard-fought disputes over children and money. Washington is a community-property state, and the firm has deep experience characterizing and dividing complex estates, tracing separate property, and accounting for retirement accounts, real estate, and business interests. Whether a case can be resolved through negotiation or demands determined courtroom advocacy, the firm focuses on protecting what matters most: the client’s children, financial security, and ability to move forward.

The family law practice includes:

  • Contested and uncontested divorce and dissolution
  • High-asset and complex property, asset, and debt division
  • Division of small businesses, professional practices, and retirement assets
  • Difficult and complex child custody and parenting-plan disputes
  • Complex and contested child support, including enforcement and modification
  • Spousal maintenance (alimony)
  • Relocation (move-away) cases and modifications of existing orders
  • Paternity and parentage
  • Father’s rights and same-sex family law
  • Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements
  • Domestic violence and protection orders
  • Mediation and collaborative approaches

Bankruptcy

The bankruptcy team at Washington State Attorneys has successfully filed thousands of bankruptcy petitions throughout Western Washington, helping thousands of Washingtonians take their lives back and get the financial fresh start the bankruptcy laws afford. The firm’s bankruptcy lawyers are extremely experienced, aggressive, and affordable, and they fight to obtain each client the fullest and best relief the Bankruptcy Code allows in both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases, from wiping out overwhelming unsecured debt to stopping creditor harassment, collection lawsuits, and wage garnishment.

Chapter 13 “House Saver” Bankruptcies — Stop a Foreclosure and Keep Your HomeThe bankruptcy team is especially experienced in and focused on Chapter 13 “house saver” bankruptcies. When a homeowner is facing the loss of their home, filing for Chapter 13 immediately stops the foreclosure or trustee’s sale through the automatic stay. From there, the Chapter 13 plan lets the homeowner cure their past-due mortgage payments over time and get caught up, reinstating the loan and saving the home from being sold by a trustee. For many families, this is the difference between losing everything and keeping the roof over their heads — one of the most powerful tools in the entire Bankruptcy Code, and a core focus of this firm.

Washington State Attorneys, PLLC is a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy relief under the Bankruptcy Code.
