I'm very confused. My husband and I were sent to him by Legal Shield to be our attorney for an anti harassment case we have on someone. Initally, he seemed very kind and interested in the case and said he was going to request the packet of evidence from the court house and that he would call on Friday (just 2 days later). Friday came and went, no phone call. We even called him three times and emailed him twice but did not get a response from him for 3 more days. Finally, today we got an email stating "You won't be able to get an anti-harassment order"...We DO have one on a woman but she is appealing it which is why we need an attorney. He also said that he would need to see the evidence...but wait, wasn't that what he said he was requesting from the court house days prior? Long story short, we are 4 days out from court and clearly we have no attorney. What a disappointment. We really needed some help and advise and he failed to do VERY basic things. I cannot beleive this has happened. Speaking to the Clark County Court staff, he is known for this.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
