Attorney Information

Overview

Lisa C. Goldman provides legal services to clients in a number of fields, such as criminal defense, civil litigation, and election recounts. She also has experience litigating issues pertaining to health insurance and pension benefits under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).

Lisa has a commanding presence, as seen by her successful track record in both trials and appeals. She has been successful in getting her clients off on all criminal charges, from felonies to misdemeanors to traffic violations. She won a verdict in civil court that exceeded $400,000. She has also settled many personal injury matters, some for more than a million dollars. She successfully used a recount method to overturn the results of a Wisconsin election in the state's northern region. In a first for Wisconsin, she successfully represented the Democratic Party in circuit court to get voting hours extended at a polling place that had been temporarily closed. She assisted Senator Clinton's campaign for president. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, she was appointed to serve on the Rules Committee.

For six years, Lisa was an active member of the State Bar of Wisconsin's Professional Ethics Committee. She is also frequently appointed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to act as a referee in attorney discipline matters. She also belongs to the American Bar Association, the Dane County Bar Association, the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Inns of Court.

Lisa interned for Representative Spencer Coggs of the Wisconsin State Assembly during her college years at the University of Wisconsin, and she also spent a summer working for the United Nations. Later, she was a reporter for Al-Fajr based out of East Jerusalem, Israel. She joined the Peace Corps after completing her degree in political science, and she worked as an Agricultural Extension Officer and Small Business Development Officer in Lesotho, Africa.

Lisa clerked at the Wisconsin Department of Justice and was a student attorney in the Legal Defense Program, a semi-finalist in the Heffernan Oral Advocacy Competition, a quarter-finalist in the Rendigs National Products Liability Moot Court Competition, and a new mom all while attending law school.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
