    Hired Attorney 2020-2021
Horrible communication, doesn’t listen to her clients, wasted my time. Never returned my emails until I said I want different representation. Sent paperwork in the mail for me to fill out without alerting me it was on the way or explaining how to fill it out. I left a voicemail and sent an email with my questions with no response. Wasted my doctor’s appointments and my time and energy to set them up when some days I can barely get out of bed. Also I had to do some maneuvering and pull some favors to get the doctor’s appointments in time to have the paperwork filled out by their deadline. All of this went to waste. I am referred to an attorney by my doctor and contact them. They say they will review the exhibit file and will let me know what they think about my case. I am still on the edge about if I am going to stick with Mary Kay or not and just want another attorney’s point of view before I make a decision. I contact Mary Kay’s assistant and ask for my file. She forwards my email to Mary Kay and I actually get a response from her. She tells me to contact the previous attorney for it. Also, she demands an answer that Monday (again, it is Friday afternoon) as to if I am going to stick with her or not. I told her that is not enough time for me. I need to get the file and have someone review it to make a decision. She emails me again still demanding a response Monday. This just seals the deal for me that she is NOT the attorney for me. Seriously, she and her assistant only responded when I said I want other representation yet somehow she demands an answer from me that Monday, a business day later? If you can even call it that. With it being Friday afternoon there’s no way I could get the file and have someone review it all in one day on Monday. I most likely would’ve had an answer Tuesday or Wednesday and may have kept her on but her inability to listen to me or keep me informed, her horrible communication (really the lack thereof), her wasting my time, and her ridiculous and impossible deadline leaves me with no faith in her ability to properly represent me whatsoever. It’s funny how she could never respond to me when I had questions and needed help but demanded I respond to her question a business day later. She is obviously not here for her clients.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
