    Hired Attorney 2017-2020
Everything was great in the beginning. James L. Pak and his staff were very good at returning phone calls within a day, emails returned within the hour. I was searching for a personal injury attorney in Vancouver, WA that would be able to assist in a serious car wreck that left me with a broken tibia and fibula as well as 4 bruised/broken ribs. It was not my fault and I needed compensation to pay for my medical bills. I was in the hospital for a little over a week. I found James Pak by searching online for accident attorneys in my area when he popped up. They were at the top of the search rankings, so I assumed that they were good. I checked his license and found out he had a license in Washington and Arizona. Cool - i thought. We set up a consultation, hired him and went on our way. Phone calls answered, etc. It was once I signed over all my rights and gave them permission to handle my situation that it all fell apart. I was ignored, phone calls returned weeks later. We went through 8 months of no contact where they never even contacted me about my situation. Mean time, I have all these medical places calling me sending me letters for payment. After 2 years, James L. Pak and company called me with and offer to settle my case with the other drivers insurance. It was half of what I was expecting from talking to other attorneys. James said he had gone to bat for me and this was the best and final offer they were willing to make. He advised that ultimately it was my decision to take it, but he recommended that I do take it. I declined. I needed more money just to pay my bills resulting from this accident. Another offer came. We had to accept this one as it really was a final offer and james said they weren't willing to go to court over my case. It would be too expensive for them. So we cut a check. I was glad that after almost 2.5 years it was finally over. Then my check came. over 3/4 of the settlement was GONE. They took over 75% of my settlement money. I couldn't believe it. I started calling them, emailing them, NO ANSWER. Finally after one month they said it was their fee I agreed to when I signed those documents now almost 3 years ago. They said the rest went to medical bills, paper printing fees, hospital administration fees etc. It was ridiculous. Then I started googling James Pak and found out about his criminal record in Arizona. Pretty extensive and scary honestly. It perfectly explained why I wasn't getting calls back and they took 75% of my check for various expenses and fee's. I never agreed to all of that. There are plenty of other attorneys to hire when you need a personal injury lawyer.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
