Hired Law firm 2001-2002Those were the exact words, “It’s a crap shoot”, Cheryl said to me when I asked her what I should do. I hired her to represent me in my divorce back in late 2001. She did absolutely nothing for me! The original divorce decree ordered that I pay child support of $600/month, my son’s medical insurance, 86% of whatever the insurance company did not cover, give up our home and all the equity in it, the land we had purchased and any equity. I also was ordered to pay $1K per month for 36 months. At the end of that time period I was then supposed to pay, are you ready for this, an additional lump sum of THIRTY SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! I have never had that much money in my life! Additionally, I had to give my ex our ‘99 Ford Expedition that was an Eddie Bauer edition and approximately $4400 in cash for her to take it back. All assets in the house were given to my wife while I was saddled with all the debt from credit cards and personal loans. Cheryl did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for me! She did not suggest I get appraisals done. She did not look at our tax filings. She folded like a cheap suit! It is now over 18 years since my divorce was finalized and I am finally about to payoff ALL the debt I was saddled with (once you go into arrears the State of Arizona charges you 10% interest)!! This ruined my credit and subsequently I could not get any jobs requiring any kind of a security clearance. I have been in more civilized bar fights than my “attorney” Cheryl Copperstone allowed to be done to me! She is the worst of the worst. She does not care about you or your case. Avoid her at all costs. Matter of fact you ought to hire my ex wife’s attorney. Now she worked!

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
