Hired Law firm 2019-2020Steve Centouri talks a great game, but when all was said and done I would've been better off with my wife's lawyer. His office demonstrated no urgency in regards to ensuring that the opposing counsel's inquiries were being fulfilled or related to me, stretching the proceedings for a standard (no children, no shared property) divorce out to over two years. As an example, after hand delivering my tax return directly to his receptionist at his office, they ended up losing it and never informed me, leading to the judge finding that I was engaged in “fraudulent disposition”. After finally receiving the decree of dissolution that was exceedingly favorable to my ex-wife, it was directly stated that Centouri could have supplemented or submitted a new decree within two weeks of receipt...that he neglected to do. He also didn't respond to my ex-wife's China Doll affadavit that awarded three times the lawyer fees as was previously decreed, leaving me on the hook for that. And of course, he never responded to any of these complaints or concerns. Basically, if you are willing to babysit him and do all the work of representing yourself while using him as an empty suit, then best of luck to you. Otherwise you'd be better off with someone who actually cares about the outcome of the case.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
