Overview
Matt A. Erickson was born and raised in the South Bay Area. He briefly left San Jose to attended Purdue University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Management with a minor in Economics from the Krannert School of Management.
After graduating from Purdue University in 2008, he returned to the Bay Area to attend Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, where he was awarded an academic scholarship. During his time at Golden Gate University School of Law, he won multiple awards, was a member of the law review, and was inducted as a member of the Justice Jessie W. Carter Society. He graduated from law school in 2011, passed the State Bar examination, and became a member of the State Bar of California later that year. After becoming a member of the Bar, he began practicing family law as an associate attorney for his father's law practice, the Law Offices of Mark A. Erickson, and has practiced family law exclusively ever since.
During his years of practice he has represented countless clients in all areas of family law including, but not limited to, the areas of child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, domestic violence restraining orders, and both simple and complex property division issues, including business characterization, valuation, and division. This has included successfully obtaining and defending requests for domestic violence restraining orders, negotiating multiple settlements that involved complex business structures and real estate interests, navigating a client with substance abuse issues from no contact with their child to having primary custody through both contested and uncontested proceedings, and obtaining favorable orders in pre-trial discovery disputes that have helped lead to favorable final resolutions for his clients. He has also been appointed by the Court to assist third parties and their counsel in resolving their cases at Settlement Officer Conferences and Mandatory Settlement Conferences. In addition, he has been approved by and appointed by the Court to represent minor children in connection with their parent's child custody and visitation disputes. In October of 2019, he was approved by the California Board of Legal Specialization as a Certified Family Law Specialist. After years of successful practice as an associate attorney, Mark and Matt formed the partnership Erickson Family Law, LLP where they will continue to effectively represent clients with family law issues.
Matt is an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and San Jose Sharks fan. In his spare time, he enjoys playing ice hockey, attending sporting events, seeing live music, and spending time with his wife and best buddy, Kodi, the dog he and his wife rescued in 2017 and can be seen around the office from time to time.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
