After consulting our trusted family attorney, that could not represent us due to the potential conflict of interest our case presented, we received the names of three recommended attorneys working in Sacramento and El Dorado County, and Bryan was on the top of that short list. Having worked extensively with Bryan and his entire team for more than three years now with our complex, multi-faceted trust, I can say that his extensive knowledge, multi-dimensional skills, and natural abilities are truly impressive. First, Bryan represented us in a contest to restore the longstanding trust that was in place, determine the mental capacity of our beloved family member, and legally document the behavior of two individuals that appeared to strongly influence our family member while she suffered from documented diminished capacity. Through Bryan's patience, professionalism, and dogged determination throughout the COVID crisis, he skillfully negotiated an optimal settlement. Since the settlement, i have consulted Bryan several times to assist with legal determinations on real property in and out of state, ways and means to best preserve estate assets, guidance on how to legally move my loved one out-of-state and close to me, so that i can personally oversee the 24/7 care and visit with our family member daily. When the time comes, Bryan and his highly skilled and professional team will be consulted on the administration of our family trust, to ensure all aspects are executed in accordance with our family member's desires. Having served as a military officer for more than 30 years, core values, honoring those that you serve, and integrity, I have long believed, our society's human currency. Bryan and his team are the GOLD STANDARD in this arena. And, while many American's like to joke about attorneys and how much they get paid, I can tell you that Bryan is worth every cent of his services...by the way, i don't joke about attorneys anymore, now that I've met Mr. Bryan Phipps!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
