    Hired Attorney 2023-2026
We would never hire Jaime Gonzalez or Lagerlof LLP again. Our experience was one of the most stressful and costly situations we have ever gone through. We hired Ms. Gonzalez because of her decades of probate litigation experience. What we expected was strategic guidance, preparation, and strong trial advocacy. Instead, the representation often felt disorganized, reactive, and far more expensive than we anticipated. We believe we were originally quoted around $100,000 for trial and $50,000 for mediation, yet our final legal bill exceeded $300,000. After reviewing transcripts, emails, and court filings ourselves, we were left deeply concerned about the lack of apparent formal settlement efforts before trial despite the enormous legal fees incurred. We also became increasingly concerned about procedural issues, including witness exclusions during discovery that left us going into trial with effectively no witnesses of our own. From our perspective, the trial strategy continued focusing on arguments the court did not appear receptive to, while important credibility concerns involving the opposing side’s key witness did not seem to be effectively challenged. At one point, the court even held a hearing regarding failures related to exhibit filings and compliance with court rules. The repeated explanations involving missed emails, discovery confusion, and filing issues gradually undermined our confidence in the representation. In the end, we lost the case, faced exposure to the opposing side’s attorney fees, and were left with over $300,000 in legal bills. No attorney can guarantee a result, and litigation is inherently uncertain. This review reflects only our personal experience and opinions after reviewing the transcripts, billing records, emails, and court filings in our matter. Based on our experience, we would strongly encourage others to carefully evaluate billing practices, communication, and litigation strategy before retaining this firm.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
