Norton Basu helped me with an update of my estate documents. I award them my highest praise for a professional services firm, which is "EFFICIENT". The process was seamless in spite of an unrelated personal calamity in my life. It was my pleasure to work with Ashley, Zakiya, Somita, and their notary Barbara. I would recommend Norton Basu to friends and family.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Somita Basu, of Norton and Basu, LLP on a family trust and estate planning matter. Somita was extremely attentive to my needs and assisted us in drawing up the proper documents to enable me to care for my father and his estate to ensure that he would be well taken care of I in the event of his inability to manage his personal and financial affairs. I greatly appreciate her help and look forward to working with her and the law firm in the future regarding any additional needs

My wife and I have an overall good experience working with NortonBasu LLP over about less than three months since late July 2021 in creating documents for my estate planning. The documents consist of a revocable Living Trust, a Power of Attorney, an Advanced Health Care Directive, and a Will. The over-90-page documents are neatly organized in six sections/categories in a nice and durable binder on thicker-than-normal paper: General/summary (15 pages), living trust (28 pages), certification of trust (4 pages), wills for both of us (16 pages), Power of Attorney for both (10 pages), Advanced Health Care Directive for both (20 pages), and personal property form (1 pages) for filling in what we want to leave behind. Glad to have worked with a team professionals addressing our questions over time. They work as a team. We started out with an initial meeting with Zakiya and quickly moved into collecting information using their online questionnaires with help from Ashley along the way. Two challenging aspects of the whole process for us were to understand, initially, the legal terms and to figure out our contingent beneficiaries. Ashley provided a document providing definitions of the terminologies — a very helpful guide for us. We also collected questions for the team and Somita met with us on the phone to address all those questions at once. We iterated over emails throughout the process and Ashley provided three drafts over time for our reviews, edits, and confirmations before signing the documents in person in the end at their Los Gatos office, in the presence of two witnesses, including a notary public provided by NortonBasu LLP. We now have peace of mind having taken care of an estate planning we’d wanted to do for years.

Norton Basu LLP made drafting and finalizing my Estate Plan a smooth and efficient process. I appreciated their willingness and availability to address questions. Also, the ability to ensure that I understood each element of my estate plan. It was great to be able to access items via their electronic portal and communicate via email for clarity. With check-in calls as needed. It was a very pleasant experience working with the firm to develop my Estate Plan.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
