    Consulted Law firm 2017-2018
Sharon was appointed by a scumbag attorney who forced a guardian ad litem on my divorce case claiming I’m incapacitated from making decisions. My attorney had a settlement agreement in hand when my mother hired him. He refused to review and reach an agreement and essentially blocked me from signing my settlement agreement because it requires his signature as well. I did not want this attorney to represent me, I did not hire him, and he would not review the settlement agreement because he wanted to wrack up his legal fees. Due to our disagreements of what he was filing without asking for my approval or consulting me first. After 3 hearings, he got the judge appoint Sharon as my guardian ad litem and violated my rights to be able to make any decisions in my divorce case. When Sharon was appointed I never heard from her until my attorney wanted me to pay him to continue on my case. She called me to be his bill collector. She worked against me and was telling me needed to accept his request. I did not approve. Sharon should have been the mediator to reach a quick resolution to the settlement agreement she claims she reviewed but yet didn’t do anything. Then she started makes up lies to justify her need to be involved. In fact, I had to explain to her what we agreed to in the settlement agreement. She was clueless. Due to her immunity from the court, they awarded her that I pay her $3000 for doing absolutely nothing, bashing me for asking questions and being frustrated when no one is giving me answers. She never disclosed to me her hourly rate and never sent me a running bill for what she was doing. At the end she provided an invoice and claimed she was doing me a favor by charging me less than her normal rate. Her hourly rate was the same as the scumbag attorney. This should illegal. In the end she gave everything to my ex wife and signed the same settlement agreement she had in hand the whole time.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
