Hired Attorney 2019Still getting to know her and her work, but so far she has been exemplary. She makes you feel very comfortable, even at a difficult time (as a grieving client in a new confusing experience of dealing with the estate of a recently deceased parent), and is always patient and empathetic when you don't understand something and she has to explain. She also seems to be well-prepared, very smart, and accessible - and she has waived some charges for very short emails, which not necessary, but it makes a nice gesture that her client is a person, not a source of money to nickel-and-dime. Never makes one feel dumb or less or uninformed, something I've got from other lawyers in the past. You can really engage in intelligent conversation with her. Her work product so far - though again still beginning to work with her - has been everything I could ask for. In addition to helping with my parent's estate, I have her preparing a joint living trust, advanced health care directives, and related items and she has been wonderful. I am very glad to have found her and look forward to continue our work into the future.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
