    Hired Law firm 2020
At the time that I retained Mr. Manzoor he demanded that I sign a substitution of attorney before he even began. I have since found out from the California State Bar that such behavior is unethical and inappropriate. I asked him what he believed he would need to get me through this matter, and made it very clear that I did not want him to over process this case, as it would do not do me any good to get up to trial, but not able to proceed from there. He required a $7000 retainer, but I provided him with $9000. He charged me several times to repeat information to him in multiple conversations and still did not know the basics of my case, to re-work the errors in his subpoenas, and to reschedule appointments due to his own schedule. On more than one occasion he scheduled events that required my presence with the opposing counsel without consulting me or my availability. From day one Mr. Manzoon insisted that I needed to conduct a deposition with video and a transcriber. He was never able to complete the task of the deposition (despite being scheduled multiple times), or produce anything (besides one document) from his subpoenas. Last week I became upset with him that he did not even know the duration of the marriage after being paid thousands of dollars to "work the case," so he threatened to drop my case with just a month to go until trial when I would not accept his settlement agreement from the other side. Magically this week all of my $9000 is gone! Mr. Manzoor spent all of my money on his telephone calls and "working the case," and just notified me that he is filing the substitution of attorney before the end of business day, today. Mr. Manzoor is unprofessional and ineffective in his approach to family law, as well as unable to manage the case funds. Now, on top of my original problem, I get to file a complaint with the State Bar and his malpractice insurance. Save yourself the addition to your problem and do not hire Shahib Manzoor.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
