After roughly 2 years of dealing with this very arrogant, unethical attorney, experiencing such poor representation and communication, ignoring "costly" emails (even very significant ones), I wonder how I allowed myself to deal with this utter insanity for so long. She pushed continuance after continuance after continuance for the hearings, getting no further in the case, other than huge expense! My thoughts are this attorney is incapable of handling anything other than a "cookie-cutter" divorce. The most recent experience was inquiring about the failed deposition and subpoena and how could that happen? She would not respond, not respond, not respond (which was not uncommon). I then found out she was on a long family vacation, meanwhile, my case is getting sabotaged by the other side as they were now aware of revealed information we gave to them for responses, yet NO RESPONSES! I am now having to find another attorney and am left with huge credit card debts from Wazhma's attorney fees, much anxiety and anguish causing lack of sleep. It's bad enough going through a divorce, but, hiring an attorney who is supposed to be on your side, yet lacks competence and care and is not a team player is a recipe for disaster.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
