    Hired Attorney 2017-2018
Here's what you don't want: an attorney who doesn't listen to you, and who believes the opposing party instead. An attorney who charges you $500 to redact pretty much everything on a page, and then unredacts it and sends it to the other side. An attorney who asks you again what you already sent her in an email three times. Who extends the time to submit something (while billing you to file that extension) and then doesn't actually file all of the docs in the case with the court until you email and text her at 7:00 pm on the last day it can be filed. When you need docs post-trial, she can't find them, says she will have them ready and you go to her office on that day, and they are not there, and nobody knows what you're talking about. When you ask her to respond as to why she didn't end up with the right spreadsheet (which the Court used to base its financial decisions on) when she filed it - and the one she did file is wrong, she's 'sick' for months and unavailable until you deal with all of her colleagues and they are getting tired of talking to you.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
