Verified ClientHired Attorney 2016Professional, affable, and competent. A former public defender, Derek Samuelson knows the ins-and-outs of the Larimer County court system better than anyone. Other lawyers recommended him to me as the "best lawyer in Fort Collins", and I wholeheartedly agree. He got my case thrown out completely, keeping my record clean. I can't recommend Derek Samuelson highly enough. You won't regret calling him.

Verified ClientHired Attorney 2014From the moment you first speak with Derek, his representation and advice will make you feel confident that no rock will remain unturned to give you the best possible outcome in your situation. Businesslike no nonsense professional, extremely knowledgeable and experienced with the ins and outs of the system in which he works (courts) he also manages to treat you with respect and humanity. I can absolutely and unequivocally recommend Derek. Hiring him for my case was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Verified ClientHired Attorney 2014Derek Samuelson is just simply the best. Great communicator, very responsive, highly empathetic, hardest worker I've ever known. He clearly demonstrated to us why he was public defender of the year and why his peers recommend him without reservation. He achieved dismissal of our case, sealing of the record, and a successful outcome with the university administration in a short few months. Highly recommended for students who may be dealing with both legal and university administrative charges.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
