My family and I worked with Richard Vincent and I can't say we were very happy with him. One of the biggest complaints was that he was nearly impossible to reach. Sometime it would take two weeks of phone calls and emails to get a response. It certainly felt that he'd received his money and was unwilling to be available after the fact even though we were told his fee for a trust was a flat fee and he was available to us whenever we needed him. Also, we were new and inexperienced in creating wills, trusts, Powers of Attorney, etc. When he created a "Durable Power of Attorney" for my mom, we believed it covered both financial as well as medical, which is what we asked for. We didn't find out until my mom was hospitalized and deemed incompetent that the POA he'd created was only financial and not medical. That left my mom with no one to make her medical decisions for her. Fortunately, the hospital was able to assign one of us as a medical proxy, but the whole situation was very upsetting and stressful. Before my mom entered the hospital I reached out to have a conversation about the process of getting conservatorship. After several weeks I was finally able to get him on the phone for a short discussion. To my surprise, I received a bill from him for $150. Again, I was told the trust was a flat rate. If this was outside that scope, he didn't advise me that there would be a fee for that conversation. We did end up pursuing conservatorship, but chose another attorney to help us that was responsive in the way you would expect an attorney to be.

Tom Rodriguez was knowledgeable & easy to work with. He provided sound advice & was able to work to meet our needs. His dealing with difficult attorney on the other side was excellent. He did a good job trying to get and keep the opposition working together. He always kept us informed & provided suggestions & options. It was a pleasure working with Tom during a difficult time.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
