Attorney Information
Overview
Heather W. Hart is a seasoned matrimonial and family law attorney who specializes in helping clients in New York and Connecticut navigate the most challenging disputes. Recognizing that divorce and post-judgment matters can be emotionally draining and financially complex, Heather focuses on alleviating the burdens of her clients by prioritizing settlement negotiations. With her extensive courtroom expertise and sharp negotiation skills, Heather adeptly navigates the complexities of even the toughest cases, consistently delivering favorable outcomes for her clients.
In addition to divorce, Heather specializes in post-divorce custody arrangements, particularly for clients with substantial means who are managing sophisticated parenting schedules. Heather works with clients to help ensure adequate financial support to provide for children involved in diverse and sometimes costly activities (daycare, extra-curricular activities, club memberships, college prep, and college visits).
She also handles financial discovery on assets that are overseas, highly compensated employee benefits (stocks, partnerships, differed income) and post-divorce adjustments to both alimony and child support stemming from career transitions or other life changes. She understands that these matters can involve highly contentious parties and thrives in finding creative solutions on behalf of her clients.
Heather believes that finding common ground is crucial, particularly when dealing with highly compensated individuals and high net worth assets. Coupled with her years of practice and experience and empathetic, tenacious nature, this approach has allowed her to build strong relationships with clients and adversaries alike.
Heather earned a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and a B.A. and B.F.A. from the University of Michigan. Following her clerkship for the Honorable Matthew F. Cooper, Supreme Court, New York County, matrimonial part, Heather practiced at a boutique matrimonial and family law firm in New York City. She is fluent in conversational Spanish and is a member of the Westchester Women's Bar Association and the Fairfield County Bar Association. Heather lives in Westchester County with her three daughters and beloved dog.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
