Hired Attorney 2025My experience with Attorney Sandra Hoyos Mejía was extremely disappointing. Communication was minimal, and her tone often felt short and dismissive, making it hard to feel supported or confident that she was truly advocating for me. Each time I reached out for updates or clarification, it seemed as though my questions were an inconvenience. I hired her on a Tuesday night, but nothing was filed until Friday. On top of that delay, the summons were filed incorrectly because her assistant submitted the wrong address for the respondent. Two full weeks went by with no meaningful progress or updates on my case. It also appeared that most of the legwork — such as drafting motions and preparing documents — was done by her assistants rather than by her directly. Despite this, she billed as if she completed all the work herself, and my retainer was used quickly with little transparency. At times, it even felt as though she was advocating more for the respondent — my soon-to-be ex — than for me, her actual client and the petitioner. I later found out that she works full-time for a larger firm and runs her own practice on the side, which explained why she rarely answered calls or emails and was only reachable late in the afternoons or evenings. Ultimately, I hired another attorney who, within just one day, accomplished the most important task — protecting my children. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time or money.

Consulted Attorney 2025an to deal with this wildly inept attorney who does not know how to treat her clients nor manage a calendar in a professional manner.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
