Overview

Attorney Kyle McLeod is an experienced North Florida criminal defense attorney representing clients charged with criminal offenses in Suwannee County, Florida, including Live Oak, Branford, and surrounding communities. Born and raised in Suwannee County, McLeod has more than 20 years of criminal law experience and has handled thousands of criminal and traffic cases throughout North Florida and Florida’s Third Judicial Circuit.

Before becoming a criminal defense attorney, McLeod served as a State Prosecutor in North Florida, where he prosecuted cases ranging from misdemeanors and criminal traffic offenses to serious felonies, drug trafficking cases, and first-degree murder. His experience as both a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney provides valuable insight into how the State evaluates, prepares, negotiates, and prosecutes criminal cases.

Today, McLeod represents individuals arrested or charged in Suwannee County with DUI, drug possession, drug trafficking, domestic violence, theft, battery, probation violations, driving while license suspended, no valid driver’s license, fleeing and eluding, criminal traffic offenses, juvenile offenses, and other misdemeanor and felony charges.

Born and Raised in Suwannee County

For Kyle McLeod, Suwannee County is more than an area where he practices law—it is home.

McLeod was born and raised in Suwannee County and attended Suwannee High School in Live Oak, where he played football. After completing his education and law school, he returned to his hometown to practice criminal law and has spent more than two decades representing people in the courts of North Florida.

Suwannee County is part of Florida’s Third Judicial Circuit, where McLeod has spent his legal career developing extensive experience with the local criminal justice system. His familiarity with the courts, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, procedures, and communities of the Third Judicial Circuit provides clients with representation grounded in both legal experience and deep local roots.

When someone is arrested in Live Oak, Branford, or elsewhere in Suwannee County, having a criminal defense attorney who has spent his life and career in the local community can provide valuable knowledge when navigating the criminal justice process.

Criminal Defense in Live Oak and Suwannee County

An arrest can affect a person’s freedom, driver’s license, employment, family, finances, reputation, and future. Every criminal case is different, and early evaluation of the evidence can be critical.

Depending upon the circumstances, a criminal defense attorney may examine the legality of a traffic stop, arrest, search or seizure; witness statements; body-camera and dash-camera evidence; laboratory testing; prior criminal history; bond conditions; and potential defenses.

The defense should also evaluate opportunities for dismissal or reduction of charges, suppression of evidence, diversion or pretrial intervention programs, negotiated resolutions, and trial when appropriate.

McLeod’s approach is to look beyond the arrest itself and evaluate the complete case, including the evidence, potential defenses, collateral consequences, and options that may lead to a favorable resolution.

A Law Office in the Heart of the Suwannee County Criminal Justice System

McLeod’s law office is located in Live Oak in close proximity to the agencies and facilities involved in Suwannee County criminal cases.

The office is located next door to the Suwannee County Jail and across from the Office of the State Attorney. This central location provides convenient access to the local criminal justice system and reflects McLeod’s longstanding commitment to practicing criminal defense in his hometown.

For clients and their families, particularly immediately following an arrest, having a local attorney who regularly practices in the same community where the case is pending can be especially valuable.

Suwannee County Law Enforcement and State Agencies

Criminal and traffic cases in Suwannee County may originate with a variety of local and state law enforcement agencies. McLeod represents clients whose cases involve the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Live Oak Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and other state and local agencies operating throughout Suwannee County.

Suwannee County’s location along Interstate 10 and Interstate 75, together with its rural and agricultural character, creates a unique law enforcement environment. Criminal cases may arise from interstate traffic stops, local traffic enforcement, drug investigations, agricultural inspections, hunting and fishing enforcement, boating activity, driver’s license violations, and other encounters with law enforcement.

I-10, I-75 and Criminal Traffic Cases

Two of Florida’s major interstate highways, I-10 and I-75, pass through Suwannee County, making the area a significant transportation corridor in North Florida.

Traffic stops along these highways can result in DUI arrests, drug possession or trafficking allegations, fleeing and eluding charges, suspended or invalid driver’s license cases, reckless driving allegations, and other criminal traffic offenses.

Commercial drivers may face additional concerns because a criminal traffic charge can potentially affect not only the immediate court case but also a commercial driver’s license and livelihood.

When a criminal case begins with an interstate traffic stop, the defense may need to examine the legal basis for the stop, its duration, any detention or questioning, statements made by occupants, searches of the vehicle, body-camera or dash-camera evidence, and the circumstances surrounding the discovery of alleged contraband.

Agricultural Inspection and Department of Agriculture Cases

Agriculture remains an important part of Suwannee County and the surrounding North Florida economy. Cases involving the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services may present issues different from those encountered during a traditional traffic stop or investigation.

When an agricultural inspection or encounter with state officers results in further investigation, a citation, or criminal charges, the circumstances surrounding the encounter should be carefully evaluated.

For farmers, agricultural workers, commercial drivers, and others whose employment depends upon driving, the consequences of a criminal or traffic case may extend well beyond the courtroom.

FWC, Hunting, Fishing and Boating Cases

The Suwannee River, surrounding waterways, hunting lands, and rural areas also bring residents and visitors into contact with officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

FWC officers enforce Florida laws involving hunting, fishing, boating, wildlife, and related activities. An encounter with FWC can sometimes result in a citation, investigation, or criminal charge.

When that occurs, it is important to evaluate the specific circumstances of the encounter, the evidence collected, and the law underlying the alleged violation. McLeod provides criminal defense representation for individuals facing qualifying criminal charges arising from encounters with FWC and other Florida law enforcement agencies.

More Than Just the Criminal Charge

A criminal case can have consequences beyond possible jail, probation, fines, or court costs. Depending upon the charge and the individual, a case may affect a person’s driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, employment, professional opportunities, immigration status, ability to possess firearms, or criminal record.

For that reason, effective criminal defense requires looking at the entire situation rather than simply the charge listed on an arrest report.

McLeod works to identify the legal and factual issues in each case and determine what options may be available, including dismissal, reduction, suppression of evidence, diversion, negotiated resolution, or trial when appropriate.

Local Experience in Suwannee County and the Third Judicial Circuit

Kyle McLeod represents clients throughout Suwannee County and North Florida, including Suwannee, Columbia, Hamilton, Madison, and Lafayette Counties, as well as other Florida counties depending upon the nature of the case.

For someone arrested or charged with a crime in Live Oak, Branford, or elsewhere in Suwannee County, choosing an attorney who was born and raised in the community and has spent more than two decades practicing criminal law in North Florida provides a combination of local knowledge, courtroom experience, and familiarity with the Third Judicial Circuit.

If you have been arrested, cited, or charged with a criminal offense in Suwannee County, Florida, contact the Law Office of Kyle McLeod to discuss your case with an experienced local North Florida criminal defense attorney.

My husband was facing serious felony charges which would most likely lead to prison time. Mr. McLeod was very caring and knowledgeable from the very start. He guided me along the way on what needed to be done to help to get the minimum time. We thought this would be a very lengthy process but Mr. McLeod was able to settle the case in just over two months and he was able to avoid prison time and a trial for my husband. Mr. McLeod was always very responsive in replying to my emails - I even emailed him on a Saturday night and he responded to my email on Sunday morning. I wasn't expecting a response to it until Monday sometime. I would definitely recommend him to anyone in the Suwannee County area to hire him for their criminal legal needs.
