Overview

Jason Richards graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science (1993) and Economics (1994). He earned his law degree from the John Marshall Law School in 1998, and received his Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) from DePaul University in 1999.

During law school, Mr. Richards was an editor of the John Marshall Journal of Computer & Information Law, a three-time Allen H. Schwartz Scholarship recipient, a recipient of the Ambassador of the Year Award, a faculty research assistant, and a writer for the law school's newspaper. He additionally authored and published in numerous law reviews and other scholarly journals, including the John Marshall Law Review, the Santa Clara Law Review, the John Marshall Journal of Computer & Information Law, the Colorado Lawyer, and the National Law Journal.

After law school, Mr. Richards spent an additional year obtaining his LL.M. in health law, where he received the Kamensky & Rubenstein Scholarship and published his master's thesis in the John Marshall Law Review. His law review article on res judicata was quoted extensively with approval by New York's highest court, and cited in support of a dissenting opinion by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. He is the author, most recently, of an article relating to medical-based informed consent (forthcoming Northern Illinois University Law Review) and Florida's Value Policy Law (forthcoming Florida Bar Journal).

Following his legal studies, Mr. Richards worked for EchoStar Communications Corporation, where he negotiated and drafted satellite communications contracts. He then served for two years as a Deputy District Attorney in the thirteenth judicial district of Colorado, prosecuting both misdemeanor and felony crimes. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Richards managed his own law practice in Colorado. He is presently licensed to practice before all Colorado state courts and in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado.

Mr. Richards' diverse background and experience has assisted in his transition into the firm's pharmaceutical litigation department. There, Mr. Richards works primarily on Fen-Phen and Ephedra Litigation as well as class action cases involving Shell/Texaco Bad Gasoline Litigation, Ford Truck and SUV Defective Door Latch Litigation.

Your Profile?  Update Now

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
