Overview

Growing up in Chicago, some of my favorite family stories were of my Great Aunt Bert, the Lawyer. Albertine Hathaway was born in the 1870s, passed the Illinois State Bar in 1903 and died 6 months before I was born. By all accounts she was quite a character. Deep inside I always wanted to be like her: a lawyer and a character. I prepared for my role as character by earning my B.A. in Vocal Performance. Upon graduation in 1975, I toured with a national touring company of “1776”. In 1978, realizing that I had to eat and feed my child, I gravitated naturally to the legal field, starting as a receptionist in a Boca Raton law firm and rising to paralegal. I was encouraged by my employers to go to law school, so I headed to Tallahassee with my 6 year old son in tow for law school and graduated in 1986.

My career goal was always to have a small private practice serving real people, helping them solve real problems. Over the years I have created an environment where I can serve clients my way: with excellence, imagination and compassion. After all these years, I’m still excited to come to work in the morning. I love what I do.

Often I bring our office cat Natasha Badenov to work each day – a therapy cat for the clients, staff and attorney. We work hard to make sure we find the best possible outcomes for clients who find themselves in frightening and unfamiliar situations. We enjoy helping our clients develop a picture of a better way of living on the other side of the current legal challenge. Over the past over 38 years, I have helped thousands of clients work through legal challenges and find a better life on the other side.

I like to think Aunt Bert would be proud.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
