Attorney Information

Overview

Steve Phillips is a native of West Palm Beach, Florida. He attended Auburn University where he was a member of the baseball team and graduated with a degree in accounting. He earned his law degree from Nova Southeastern University School of Law. He is board-certified by The Florida Bar in civil trial law, having been certified in 1998 and recertified every five years since. It distinguishes him as a specialist in the areas of personal injury, wrongful death and insurance law. Only about 5,000 of the nearly 80,000 eligible members of The Florida Bar are board certified in their respective fields. For the past 20 years Mr. Phillips has specialized in representing injured individuals and families who have lost a loved one due to someone else's negligence in automobile and truck collisions, motorcycle accidents, boat accidents and trip and fall accidents.

Prior to that time, Mr. Phillips gained extensive experience in the operation of insurance companies and the handling of injury claims as legal counsel to some of Florida's largest insurance companies and their insureds for nine years. His experience in handling significant personal injury and wrongful death cases from both sides allows him to offer quality representation to his clients who have been harmed in an accident from the perspective of an insider to the insurance claims industry. His practice also includes representing individuals and small businesses against large insurance companies in insurance coverage disputes where the insurance company has wrongfully denied a claim. He has tried over 100 jury trials in state and federal courts and obtained numerous multimillion-dollar jury verdicts and settlements. Steve has had multiple jury verdicts featured in the Daily Business Review and has been recognized on multiple occasions by the publications Florida Super Lawyers and Palm Beach Illustrated. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
