Attorney Information
Overview
Tom Camp was born and raised in the northeast suburbs (Chamblee/Doraville) of Atlanta, Georgia. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and graduated from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1988. He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia on July 6, 1988, and served a year as the law clerk or staff attorney to the judges of the superior courts of the Northern Judicial Circuit (Hart, Franklin, Elbert, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties) of the state of Georgia. He then spent approximately 10 years in private practice in Danielsville, Georgia, the county seat of Madison County, prior to moving his practice to Athens, Georgia. Tom has spent the last 25 plus years in private practice in and around the Athens area representing clients primarily in criminal and family law matters.
Tom regularly represents clients in the superior, state, and municipal courts in the Northern Judicial Circuit (Hart, Franklin, Elbert, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties), the Western Judicial Circuit (Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties), the Piedmont Judicial Circuit (Barrow and Jackson counties), the Alcovy Judicial Circuit (Walton and Newton counties), and part of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit (Green, Morgan and Putnam counties). Tom has also on occasion represented individuals in various counties and municipalities in metro Atlanta, including Gwinnett, DeKalb, and Fulton. Tom is a member of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Bar Association, and the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Tom is also admitted to practice in the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court Northern and Middle Districts, and the 11th Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals and has also represented clients in all of these appellate courts.
Tom is a seasoned, experienced, and respected trial attorney and has extensive litigation experience in criminal and family law cases. He has represented individuals in jury trials in criminal cases and divorce cases and has had great success. His extensive preparation and command of the courtroom has led to great verdicts in jury trials for his family law clients and the full and complete acquittal of clients charged with serious crimes, including murder and rape. Tom is familiar and has good professional relationships with many of the other attorneys in Athens and the surrounding areas who practice family law as well as many of the local prosecutors. Tom and his staff are also familiar with most of the local judges, clerks of court, and their support staff. Tom also has extensive experience representing clients in mediations in family law cases and is familiar with many of the local mediators.
Tom is married to Natalie Strickland Camp, and they have an adult son who is a graduate of the University of Georgia. Natalie is a full-time employee of Thomas A. Camp, P.C., and many clients have been impressed at how well she and Tom work together as a team. Tom and Natalie are fitness enthusiasts and especially enjoy strength training and playing golf. Having grown up in Atlanta, Tom is a big fan of the Hawks, Braves, and Falcons, and loves following his Atlanta sports teams as frustrating as that may sometimes be. Tom and his son are also big soccer fans and regularly attend Atlanta United soccer matches. Of course, the entire family enthusiastically supports the Georgia Bulldogs.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
