I hired this law office because they were the only people in town who gave me honest, straight forward advice. With my husband in the military I did not know what I was entitled to or what my life would look like after the divorce. Even on the phone talking with him before I hired him, I could tell his staff was very friendly and he KNEW what he was talking about. Over the phone he told me exactly how my case would turn out, what military benefits I could keep and what I was entitled to. Every other lawyer I spoke with, including JAG on post, knew nothing compared with him. His knowledge of military divorces is beyond compare. He is the only lawyer I would trust for a military divorce.

Shawn and his staff did a wonderful job. During a very difficult time in my life they were always there, always answered their phone and always gave me reassurance that everything was going to be well. I cannot thank them enough.

This lawyer is a LIAR. He lied on me in court. Piece of trash. Destroys any family ties for $$$$

I would like to start by saying respect goes a very long way in life. I initially called this firm just to get some information on a adult adoption reversal. The assistant who answered the phone was very polite and she answered my questions the bs she could. She then transfered me over to speak with the Attorney. The attorney started off asking questions and I was answering them. As I as explaining my situation and wha I needed assistance with I was stopped as I as talking and told that "this is no a common case we are willing to help with" and I was then hung up on. I didn't get a chance to ask questions or even get any advice on what would be recommended. I do not like that he hung up the phone in my face. That is very unprofessional and I would not recommend this law firm whatsoever especially with he lack of respect.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
