Attorney Information

Overview

Ryan R. Shafer is a partner with Meriwether & Tharp, LLC. Prior to joining the firm Ryan obtained considerable experience litigating family law cases as an associate attorney with Ferguson Law Firm, P.C. located in Jonesboro, Georgia. Ryan has litigated divorce, modification, child support, legitimation and contempt cases in Fulton, Clayton, Henry, Fayette and Spalding counties.

Ryan was born and raised in Florence, New Jersey. He graduated from La Salle University in 2008 with a degree in Mathematics. He obtained his law school degree from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School in 2013. After his first year of law school, Ryan had a summer internship with Supreme Court Justice Virginia Long of the Supreme Court of New Jersey. During his last semester of law school Ryan was selected to participate in the DeKalb County Family Law Externship Clinic where under the 3rd Year Practice Act he represented indigent litigants in family law matters in front of Chief Judge Mark Anthony Scott. This experience solidified Ryan’s decision to practice family law after having the opportunity to help clients get through such difficult times. Additionally, Ryan received a CALI Award for Excellence in Trademark Law for earning the highest grade in his class, served as a Peer Mentor to first year law students and was selected as a Student Ambassador.

On a personal level, Ryan enjoys watching and playing all sports, working out, drawing and spending time with his family and friends.

    Hired Attorney 2018
After living with an agreement that was mediated by Mr. Shafer in 2018, I feel confident in saying Mr. Shafer is a poor attorney at best. There are so many holes in the permanent parenting plan that my ex-wife has taken advantage of over the years. The moment I walked out of mediation I knew what I had agreed to was a mistake. I sent an email the next day to Mr. Shafer and had a meeting with him. He indicated there was no way to get out of the agreement unless I was to go to the court and indicate that he was negligent. ( I should have done this, looking back on it now.) In general going to a big divorce firm is a terrible idea, you get a baby lawyer who talks to big brother lawyer how has 15 baby lawyers under them. You are just a number to them. Some of the ‘basic’ areas missed in my agreement are “any out of network health care expense has to be agreed upon by both parties”. Extracurricular spending should be split evenly between children. He missed that one as well. Why he thought advising me to give the ex-wife both medical and extracurricular is beyond me. In short, look else where for an attorney, these hacks just want your $$ ( well in fairness they all do). Divorce is awful and your first agreed to document will haunt you until your kids are 18
