Hired Attorney 2023Paid a $5000 retainer that is a flat rate. So if she chooses to do only $1500 worth of work from May to August. No money back. My divorce date was supposed to be July 19, 2023. She double booked herself and my court date was canceled and moved to October 13, 2023. I asked her to file an emergency hearing. She told me she did and when I asked for proof. It got filed the following Monday after I asked for the estamp proof. She did not file it like she told me she did. She states in the agreement she has up to 3 days to respond to my emails. She never did. I asked her a set of questions via email three times. She never once returned the email with the answers. When she saw how incredibly upset I was with her attention to my case. She proceeded to call me on a Saturday and tell me she was busy helping her brother with cancer - I did not need to know this personal information about her. She did not have to call me and tell me that and make me feel like a burden. All I wanted was a simple no contest divorce from an abusive husband. I fired her Aug 21, 2023. She said "I'm sorry to see you go"; she was often condescending the small amount of time we did speak. She was never on time when we did have 2 phone meeting set up. Her initial consult, which was set up by her dad - I had to call after 15 minutes had passed to ask if we were still having the meeting as I had to pre purchase the consult. During the duration of being retained she sent an invoice once in June and then after insistence from me she finally sent another one Aug 25, 2023. I fired her for lack of advocating zealously on my behalf and not performing competently or diligently and absolutely not maintain communication.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
