Hired Attorney 2019-2021This lawyer takes on a role as a Guardian ad Litem, aside from being an adoption lawyer. Expecting a trained professional whose baseline should be the standard- the best interest of the children, you'll instead get what's equivalent to having a gossiping next door neighbor "guide" you with their observations. My high-conflict divorce was driven towards more conflict as my ex-wife was empowered through this lawyer's sheer ignorance. Expect this person to display and work with biased judgment. She'll ignore major issues and pull from the situation what fits her experiences (which is clearly far from those whom she represents), she'll repeat hearsay falsehoods without just cause and will do all of this in front of a judge. The side she favors can violate (more than once) a court order, but if you are not the favored, you will be scolded (even threatened loss of custody) for not accepting said violation(s) and mostly for not doing as she says. Thus leading to more divisive outcomes. If you have questions, expect to rarely have them answered. You'll see in the end that you are charged for one-on-one conversations she had with the opposition that you were unaware of, leaving you further frustrated as you remember how you couldn't even get a simple one-on-one email reply from this individual. She will however come alive in a group email/phone conversation just to give you a snide remark in some form, making sure the other side gets to read/hear the remark, creating more division and empowerment. This person also acts as a "mediator" and will have sessions with you and your spouse that again does nothing but create more division and you'll be charged for it. My family was observed for 19 whole months, with nothing but bickering spouses as the central issue due to a parent/spouse being outright neglectful. No substance abuse, no sexual abuse, no domestic abuse involved...nothing. Therefore making you wonder why the long hold under this person's observance. This lawyers position went from recognizing the issues, or so she says, to outright being annoyed with us as she flip flopped her observations throughout. I was scolded for REACTING to the ACTIONS of my ex and she gave absolutely no attention to said actions. This was a repeated process. You simply cannot have a reaction without an initial action, a basic understanding that is ignored with this person. Had she done what she was hired for within a reasonable time, my ex and I might be better off, but we suffered more as she dragged us along and tainted our situation with her lack of care. Her review was submitted 10 1/2 hours before trial and admitted to losing her notes which stated something totally opposite from what she finally submitted to the court. She had the audacity to scold me in front of the judge during trial for not at least "faking my behavior" during her observations and told me at the end it was all my fault and that I need to get over it. Overall, one of the absolute WORST experiences ever having this individual involved. She took an incredibly stressful situation and shot that difficulty to the moon. She gets to create incredible division and then walk away as my family continues to suffer from the fallout and the ongoing issues that she chose to ignore. Her ego trumped the best interests of the children and that is highly unprofessional for these situations. How she can be granted this power over those in the community she serves is baffling.

Hired Attorney 2019-2020We were so fortunate to have been referred to Hicks Law Group. Our situation was very delicate and emotional on all fronts. Sherriann was both very understanding and willing to listen. She is highly respected in her field and is well connected with some of the best resources. She gave us sound advice as we navigated a road that was not familiar and her efficiency and communication calmed many nerves. We couldn't be more happy and grateful for their knowledge and professionalism! Highly recommend! Our family is forever grateful.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
