Hired Attorney 2020-2021I am a 64 year old lawyer who has worked in both large and smaller firms. In the course of my career, I have worked with several estate planning lawyers. I am not in a position to judge whether Bob Kaufman is smarter or more knowledgeable than the other estate planning lawyers I have worked with. Bob seems to know his practice area inside and out with a very high level of expertise -- but other estate planning lawyers also seemed very competent. But Bob does two things better than any other estate planning lawyer that I have ever worked with: (1) He explains things incredibly clearly with just the right amount of detail, making it easy for my wife and me to understand how things work, and anticipating most of the questions we might ask; and (2) He is lightning quick with his turnaround time and responses to our questions and inquiries, with his typical response time measured in minutes rather than hours or days. I prefer working with Bob to working with the estate planners in my own firm(s).

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
