Overview

Veda Maniquis, born in the Republic of the Philippines, immigrated to the US as a young child with her parents and seven siblings. As an immigrant raised in a diverse neighborhood in the City of Chicago, Veda was able to fully appreciate that her Filipino-American identity served as an invaluable link between two cultures. Driven by her unique background, passion for multiculturalism, and experiences, Veda has dedicated her legal career to identifying legal solutions for individuals and families much like her own helping them achieve the American dream.

Veda has been an attorney for over seventeen years and specializes in US immigration & naturalization law and real estate law. She represents individuals and organizations from all around the world in immigration and related matters before the United States Citizenship & Immigration Service. Veda handles a full spectrum of immigration issues, including employment-based immigration, family-sponsored immigration, non-immigrant visas, consular matters, naturalization, certificates of U.S. citizenship, asylum status, TPS and humanitarian visas, permanent resident status renewals, and representation at USCIS interviews. Veda understands the concerns and struggles often experienced by many arriving in a new country, so she takes the time to listen to her clients while making sure that their needs are met in a timely fashion.

Veda also handles residential real estate closings, and her areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, reviewing and explaining details of purchase and sale agreements; review of requested loan documentation and loan disbursements; prepare and examine title and closing documents to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws; title and survey examinations to ensure a clean asset for the lenders collateral; deal with banking and financial organizations on behalf of clients; and represent buyers and sellers in short sale transactions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
