5.0 out of 5 stars

David Schaffer is the finest divorce attorney I know. During my very contentious divorce, Attorney Schaffer represented me with high morals, intelligence, and skill. He always provided guidance to protect me from an ex-husband who threatened me many times. I hope many women read this and choose Attorney Schaffer for their counsel, not only to win custody of their children, yet to have the strongest and most accurate support possible throughout the divorce. I know this for a fact because I am also a divorce lawyer.

David was a needed ally during what was undoubtedly the most difficult experience of my life. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined that, along with the breakdown of my marriage, I would be forced to navigate being a party in a Hague Convention case. David artfully navigated the complexities of my case, using his extensive experience and expertise in this and international family law to make clear the key issues, direct the needed actions, and ultimately, helped me settle what I would have called an “unsettle-able” case. Our children are staying here in the U.S. where they belong. He’s relentless when it comes to championing his client, but equally important, he treats his clients with kindness and respect while never losing sight of the end goal.

Speaking with David Schaffer was very reassuring. He gave very good advice. He was very patient with me and made sure I left with no questions unanswered. I left the conversation feeling very assured and more knowledgeable. Overall I had an outstanding experience and would highly recommend him.

My husband and I sought out Mr. Schaffer's services to help us with a custody case for our daughter's children in Switzerland. He provided excellent legal advice and was instrumental in helping us seek out strong legal counsel in Switzerland. We are very thankful we found him.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
