Attorney Information

Overview

Erin O'Connell has dedicated her career to practicing in areas of law that affect families and the everyday lives of individuals. Erin was drawn to these areas of law because she enjoys the people she meets in the course of her practice and representing their interests legally. Erin has handled countless family and residential real estate matters and in every case has been reminded that respect, privacy, thoroughness, availability and understanding are crucial. Whenever possible, Erin works towards an amicable resolution of any contentious matter with the overall goal of zealously representing clients while simultaneously concerning herself with preparing and positioning clients as best as possible for their lives post-decree or post-transaction.

Erin O'Connell earned her Juris Doctor from DePaul University College of Law. While in law school, Erin earned a Certificate in Family Law through DePaul Law's Schiller, DuCanto and Fleck Family Law Center. In addition to earning her Certificate in Family Law and taking an extensive number of family law classes, Erin worked during law school and beyond for one of the Chicagoland area's premier family law attorneys. In this position, Erin gained invaluable experience in family law working on complex divorce cases, including complicated asset distribution cases and difficult and delicate child custody and support issues, as well as simpler divorce matters.

From there, Erin went on to join a more general law practice where she continued her work in family law and began her work in immigration and real estate matters. In this position, Erin handled a great deal of residential real estate transactions and litigation as she practiced through the local real estate market's boom and as the market turned downwards. In addition to handling straight-forward real estate transactions for both buyers and sellers, Erin has handled landlord-tenant issues, bankruptcies, City of Chicago Administrative issues, and civil litigation resulting from real estate transactions.

In addition to her work in family law and real estate, Erin has handled countless immigration matters, including family based immigration issues, employment based immigration issues, deportation issues and Board of Immigration Appeals. Erin also has personal experience with USCIS and immigration matters having a child born overseas. Erin has worked on immigration issues that have gained world-wide media attention and was an essential part of the team of a prominent case involving a humanitarian release of a foreign national (for more on that case, follow this link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,325028,00.html).

Erin is a member of Illinois State Bar Association, the DuPage County Bar Association, and the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers. She was promoted to Partner at Blacha Law Office in July, 2021.

    Recommends this Attorney
I hired Erin O'Connell to get my Parenting Schedule for my son changed from 50/50 parenting time. My ex-wife and I had been practicing 50/50 time for 10 years. After GAL investigation, the recommendation was 60% parenting time for me and my Attorney (Erin O'Connell) successfully negotiated a settlement to avoid a hearing/trial..... so we WON!

Your Profile?  Update Now

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
