Kathryn Ciesla has a broad depth of experience in litigation, corporate law, matrimonial law, licensing, and estate planning and administration. Her clients include business executives at Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurs and companies from a variety of industries. Kathryn’s clients have common goals – to protect their interests, assets and families.
Kathryn’s career began at a general practice firm in Evanston, where she was thrown into the trenches, and focusing her work on litigation, divorce, custody, and other family related matters.
Matrimonial Law & Civil Litigation
She then moved to the largest law firm in the nation focusing exclusively on matrimonial law. Kathryn handled cases for clients with multi-million dollar holdings. Work on these cases required sophisticated financial expertise in matters of business valuation, personal tax consequences, discovery of assets, property settlement, support and trust and estate planning, as well as a deep knowledge base in business operations.
Immediately prior to joining Ciesla & Ciesla, Kathryn served as General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer for a regionally accredited college with campuses in Chicago and the surrounding metropolitan area. While ‘in-house,’ Kathryn focused her practice on corporate issues – concentrating heavily on business operations and finance.
Kathryn is able to combine her business background and her litigation skills to effectively represent businesses and executives in matters elating to business operations, litigation and family law.
Liquor Licensing
In addition to her work at Ciesla & Ciesla, in April, 2009, Kathryn was elected to the Village Board of Northbrook, where she currently serves as a Trustee. She is Chair of the Communication and Legislation Committee and is a member of the Administration/Finance and Quality of Life Committees. In 2011 she was appointed by the Village President to serve as a member of the Ad-Hoc Economic Development Committee.
Kathryn combines her practice history, along with the knowledge gained from her work in municipal government to assist clients in the food and beverage industry. She routinely works with clients to open and acquire restaurants, night clubs, bars, liquor stores and other similar establishments. She also defends liquor violations before municipalities and the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.
Kathryn currently lives in Northbrook with her husband and two children.

Hired Attorney 2024-2026If you are assigned Kathryn Ciesla as a GAL - IMMEDIATELY petition for a new GAL to be assigned to your case. DO NOT ACCEPT HER AND FILE IMMEDIATELY. Just a few highlights of my over two years of time and nearly $25,000 worth of invoices. Sadly, I believe she was too busy running for village president in Northbrook in 2024 to worry about my case. It just so happened that after her election in April of 2025 she became more engaged and somehow available. 1. Engagement began in June of 2024, Kathryn Ciesla and I met ONCE and then 5 months passed. She was non-responsive and simply negligent for nearly FIVE MONTHS. Throughout this time, I and my attorneys attempted several times to contact Kathryn to discuss the case. She was nowhere to be found. FINALLY, on November 1, 2024 she issued a response. 5 months passed and she was disengaged with proof. Meanwhile I was alienated and extorted. 2. The threshold for billing in family law is 90 days. As was said, Kathryn Cielsa was engaged in June of 2024. I did not receive my first bill until July 11, 2025. Well over a year after engagement. I was then told I had to pay the amount in full for my case to continue. I was strong-armed and Kathryn had no accountability. I have the invoices with proof. Additionally, I have confirmation from my attorneys that they, too, have concerns with her billing practice. During one hearing, when discussing hosting hearing over zoom or in person, Kathryn said and I quote "I am happy to come in to court for $400 an hour but I do not think it is necessary." We are supposed to trust her billing? 3. Kathryn exhibited EXTREME bias throughout the case. Two strong examples, on 5/23/25 an attorney of mine emailed Kathryn issuing concern of her bias and consistent catering to one side after several concerning exchanges. There were valid examples of bias in this email and, of course, Kathryn never responded. She simply did not acknowledge. The second was after an in-person meeting. While having a meeting with Kathryn and my attorney, Kathryn bluntly told me to "fake it" when discussing interacting with my ex. She then proceeded to tell both my attorney and I quote verbatim "My (Kathryn's) ex-husband was a motherfer and I (she) had to fake it too." After the meeting, I text my attorney to confirm what was said, and it was acknowledged that she did say this and we had to gloss over that. I have proof of this as well. 4. There was an significant issue with the children's initial therapist. Sadly, Kathryn refused to act only costing my children time with an inadequate professional. She came to court unprepared on several occasions regarding this matter and, in one instance, attempted to stop me from reporting this therapist to the state. Kathryn made a snide comment in an email that she assumed "like divorce attorneys" who get reported nothing would happen to the therapist. At one point, at an in-person hearing, Kathryn was literally emailing the therapist from court. Kathryn's lack of initiative and engagement for months with this therapist cost my children and me a lot of money. Ultimately, the therapist was dismissed. Was I an angel at the onset of this case? No. This is the reason why Kathryn Ciesla was assigned to my case in the first place. But, I believe in accountability and I am more than happy to discuss with anyone my role as well as Kathryn's role in my divorce. It is a shame my attorneys told me an additional $40,000 was needed for a trial to hold Kathryn accountable on the stand. At some point, there will be more examples and justifications as to why you should NEVER allow Kathryn Ciesla to be your GAL. Happy to discuss with anyone.

Hired Attorney 2012-2022Definitely the worst lawyer I've ever worked with. She puts financial gains and her own agenda ahead of the law. This is definitely not somebody you want to get into bed with

Hired Attorney 2013-2022The worst help with custody that I have ever experienced. I left one star because they will not let me leave zero Stars. Ms. Ciesla is lazy, she over charges, and likes to pick sides in order to run up her bill and cause more conflict. She tends to refer her friends for evaluations and supervision. Using them to continually drag the case out and make everybody more money. My case was easily solvable but it literally took her years to do nothing about it. When another person was put on the case he was able to easily solve it and wrap it up in a couple months where she could not get it figured out in years. I cannot stress enough how she is the absolute worst thing that ever happened to me or my children. She is the last person you would ever want on your case. Do not make the mistake that I did by letting her be assigned to you. I would love to go into more and more detail but I leave this at the risk of her lashing out at me because of this. I only hope that somebody reads it and is warned ahead of time. Maybe then they can save themselves a lot of heartache and suffering from dealing with this awful person. It just might wind up costing you more than time and money... It could cost you your heart and soul.
