Overview

Decades of Criminal Defense

Experience Serving Central Indiana

I am attorney David Shircliff and have represented thousands of clients in misdemeanor and felony matters, including 180 jury trials. Since 1990, I have devoted my career to criminal defense because your freedom, reputation, and future deserve strong protection. My work has been shaped by experience as a public defender and private defense attorney, giving me unique insight into how prosecutors build cases.

As an adjunct professor in Indianapolis and a National Criminal Defense College faculty member, I draw on my knowledge of federal and state procedures to teach lawyers across the country. Few attorneys in Hamilton County can match this level of courtroom and academic experience. When you place your case in my hands, you receive a combination of proven trial advocacy and direct client care rarely found in larger firms.

Your choice of attorney matters. Misdemeanor and felony charges carry serious penalties, and now is not the time to hire an inexperienced associate. You need a defender who understands what is at stake and is ready to challenge the opposition on your behalf.

Why Clients Trust My Representation

When you work with me, you get the best of both worlds: a solo practitioner's personal attention and a seasoned veteran's trial insight. Every person accused of a crime deserves to be treated with dignity while receiving a powerful defense. That philosophy drives how I interact with clients and how I fight in court. Prosecutors prepare aggressively, and you need someone just as determined standing in your corner.

This is what sets me apart:

  • I am the guy you want representing you when you're in trouble. My proven track record and willingness to go to trial show my commitment to getting the best possible outcome for my clients.
  • My experience makes the difference. With over 30 years in criminal defense, I have handled thousands of cases and served as lead counsel in over 180 jury trials, winning at every level.
  • I am the only one handling your case. I manage every case from start to finish, so you get the full benefit of my experience and insight without ever being handed off to an associate.

Beyond the courtroom, I work to give clients clarity during one of the most stressful times of their lives. I explain the process, outline likely outcomes, and prepare you for every step. My experience helps me anticipate the prosecution’s tactics, but my dedication to clients makes me a trusted advocate.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
