Hired Law firm 2014If I could give less than one star i would. My mother recommended him and maybe he considered it a favor but i would have rather paid someone 4x as much for more attention. After hiring Tompkins , meeting him once, and giving him the first portion of his fee, I never saw him again. My court case was pushed back 4 times a over a period of 10 months due to his inability to show up. Finally, he had a different attorney (not associated with his office) show up for my initial hearing. Proceeding from here I had 3 different lawyers (none of which were part of his firm) show up to court proceedings. 5 years later, I am currently attempting to enlist in the military and came to discover Tompkins Law didnt even have my police report on file. After hours of calls and tracking it down, i found the document and saw several inaccuracies in the officers report. I'm not sure if this would have affected my case but either way it contained inaccurate information. There was little to no consideration given to me or my case.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
