While trying unsuccessfully to obtain a debt consolidation loan, I was presented with the option of settling my debt of more than $100,000. I really didn't want to take this course of action, but felt I didn't have many options. I was told by a representative that Canyon Legal Group would help me settle my debt for less than 50% of what I owed. I was quoted an amount and told that they guaranteed that could settle my debt for this amount, and if not they would cover the remainder. This was absolutely false and I should've known better than to believe it. I paid more than $3,100 a month for 2 years into a Global Client Solutions account. I was told that I had to use this account even though I was being charged a monthly service fee of ~$150. It took many months before Canyon Legal Group even started to settle any debts, only after making sure they had collected their fees from my account. Ultimately, they did not settle all of my debts and those that they did settle, were often for more than they claimed they would be. Even after paying ~$74,000, I was still left with multiple account unsettled. I called Canyon Legal Group many times seeking assistance, but they did not provide any help. When my wife received a court summons, they did not provide any legal representation as they had promised to. I had to settle the reminder of the accounts myself costing another ~$20,000.

SCAMMERS! I’ve laid this law firm to negotiate my debt with my student loan company, Navient. I enrolled in a 5 year program, in which I was told I’d be debt free by the end of 5 years. I am at the end of my 5 year term, and I am now told that 5 years was just an “estimate” and that in order for them to do what I’ve paid them over $15,000 for, they need another 2 years and additional fees. Also worth noting, the remaining debt they are claiming they need more time for was eligible to be cleared with Navient’s recent 1.85 billion dollar settlement. They did not take action on this claim, despite this being exactly what I am paying them to do! To top it off, they are impossible to get a hold of. Every few months I get an email from a new attorney claiming they can’t reach me. I respond to the email, call the number listed and no one ever picks up or replies. This company makes false promises, they sank my credit, and have conned me out of $15,000. Do not use Canyon Legal Group!!!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
