Hired Attorney 2004-2005A 20-year-old review may not seem relevant to most, but in my opinion, a person’s character doesn’t change much over time. Reva Hill was my guardian ad litem when I was 15 years old. I am 34 now, and I still think of her—not because she helped me, but because she failed me. I assure you I wouldn’t continue to have a 20 year grudge without merit. I have reached out to her directly and she avoided me and accountability, so here we are. And I will continue to attempt to be the voice to advocate for others. She had the responsibility to advocate for me, to listen, and to understand my situation. Instead, she never reached out, never met with me (despite an all-expenses-paid opportunity), and dismissed me entirely when I tried to contact her myself. I was being abused and she ignored the facts infront of her. Genuinely, I wonder how she sleeps at night. Despite this, she still provided the judge with her opinion. Thankfully, he took the time to do what she did not—he asked me how I felt and did due diligence to make the right decision, despite her recommendation. That should have been her job. If you are considering working with her, I would think twice. In my experience, she showed little regard for the people she was supposed to be helping, and that’s not something I believe changes with time.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
