Riley & Ahler P.C.
Overview
Avery received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University, where he majored in Financial Counseling and Planning. It was through his studies at Purdue where he realized a true appreciation for individuals who spend their entire lives working and saving their hard-earned dollar to build wealth. Avery decided to pursue a law degree so that he could not only help families accomplish their goals of building wealth and preserving their assets, but also ensure that these assets get transferred to their children and grandchildren in a manner that minimizes taxation and overall governmental interference. Avery obtained his juris doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law.
Avery's practice is predominately transactional. The areas in which he practices are as follows: Estate Planning, Medicaid Qualification and Asset Preservation Planning, Guardianships, Probate and Estate Administration, Business Formation and Succession Planning, Real Estate Law and Deed and Recordable Instrument Preparation, and other financial and transactional matters. Avery also represents individuals in Landlord-Tenant disputes, and regularly accepts appellate appointments from area Judges to represent individuals before the Indiana Court of Appeals.
Avery was born and raised in Rensselaer, Indiana, and relishes the opportunity to serve the community that is "home" to him. Prior to accepting his position with The Law Office of Riley and Ahler, Avery worked as a research clerk for BB&C Attorneys at Law in Lafayette, IN, and as a Certified Legal Intern with our firm. In addition, Avery worked for the Toledo Tax Controversy Clinic during his final year of law school, where he represented financially burdened clients in IRS audits, appeals, and collections matters.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
