Overland Park Personal Injury Law Firm
Overview
The Law Firm of Barbara E. Hecht, P.C.-Overland Park, Kansas
Family Law & Divorce ∙ Wills & Estates ∙ Criminal Law ∙ Bankruptcy
I'm Barbara Hecht, an attorney with more than 45 years of experience in courtrooms throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding portions of both Kansas and Missouri. The majority of the work I do today involves handling family law and divorce-related issues or estate-related legal needs for a diverse range of clients. I also have a great deal of experience helping clients to resolve legal problems that involve criminal law, juvenile law, traffic violations, bankruptcy, debt collection defense, real estate and business.
As a solo practitioner, I work directly with each of my clients and personally represent them in every matter related to their case. I also have an experienced staff that shares my dedication to this work and the people our law firm represents.
Spotlight on Family Law
Generally speaking, I focus on helping clients who are trying to create a new and better future. I take these clients and their legal issues as they are, and I work to develop legal strategies and solutions that are tailored to fit their needs and lives, not mine.
I offer experience with a wide range of family issues, including divorce and related issues such as child custody, property division and support. I also have extensive experience with a number of narrower issues, including child custody as it relates to same-sex couples or grandparents, post-divorce modifications or enforcement, premarital agreements and the unique family law and estate planning needs of domestic partners, same-sex couples and other members of the LGBT community. I also handle domestic violence cases and protection orders, providing a safe environment for victims of domestic violence while helping them to obtain protection orders, and defending individuals accused of domestic violence in both civil and criminal proceedings.
Lastly, I have been an advocate of mediated solutions in family law cases throughout my career and have been using the collaborative law approach to achieve those ends for the better part of a decade.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
