Jan I. Berlage is an associate in the Litigation Department and a member of the Intellectual Property Group, the Bankruptcy, Reorganization and Capital Recovery Group, the Franchise and Distribution Group, and the Insurance Group. Jan's practice is concentrated in commercial litigation in both federal and state court, ranging from bankruptcy to intellectual property litigation. Jan's practice also includes civil rights, construction, and insurance coverage matters. Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, Jan was an associate with a prominent Connecticut law firm.
Jan is a member of the American Bar Association, Maryland State Bar Association, as well as the Oxford Union Legal Society. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association Board of Governors.He was appointed chair of the ABA Young Lawyers Division's Bankruptcy Committee for 2003-2004. He is chair of the Ethics and Professionalism Committee of the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers' Division and a past member of the North American Securities Administrators Association's Task Force to Reform Franchise Law Governing Earning Claims. Jan is a member of the Connecticut, New York, Maryland, and District of Columbia bars.
Jan is as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law. He is also the author of A Clear Message Regarding Service Of Process On Joint Ventures & Joint Enterprises-Ryan Contracting, Inc. v. Jag Investments, Inc. & Mellett v. Fairview Health Services, 29 William Mitchell Law Review 545 (2002).
Jan serves on the Executive Advisory Board of Heroes Helping Heroes (HHH) and is also on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Chapter of the Federalist Society.
Prior to entering private practice, Jan served as law clerk to the Honorable E. Stephen Derby, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland.
Jan is a graduate of Wesleyan University (B.A. 1992) where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; St. Catherine's College, Oxford University (post graduate 1992); and the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D. 1995) where he served on the Editorial Board, and as executive editor of the Journal of Law and Politics.
