Verified ClientHired Attorney 2021-2023Highly Efficient and Trustworthy Attorney Since 2021, I had the pleasure of working with Mark Chalpin on two cases, an eviction and rental recovery case, and an unlawful detainer case. I couldn't be more impressed with the level of service I received. Mark is the epitome of efficiency. Every email I sent was promptly responded to, regardless of the time. This level of responsiveness gave me peace of mind knowing that my case was being handled with the utmost attention and care. Moreover, Mark demonstrated a remarkable sense of honesty and integrity throughout the entire process. If there was ever a situation where pursuing legal action seemed unnecessary or not in my best interest, he was quick to provide me with honest advice and suggest alternative solutions. This level of transparency was greatly appreciated, especially considering the uncertainty and potential costs associated with lawsuits. Additionally, I found Mark's fees to be reasonable and fair, especially given the high-quality service and results I received. His dedication to providing value to his clients truly sets him apart. Overall, I cannot recommend Mark highly enough. If you're in need of legal representation, look no further. With Mark, you can rest assured that you're in capable hands.

Hired Attorney 2020-2022I retained Mark Chalpin on September 23, 2020, to represent me in a legal malpractice case. Unfortunately, my experience with him was deeply disappointing. Throughout the engagement, he was difficult to work with and consistently failed to advocate for my interests. The case ultimately settled in May 2022—not due to his efforts, but because I personally proposed and offer to opposing counsel. Mr. Chalpin frequently threatened to withdraw from the case whenever I questioned his strategy or raised objections. He appeared unable to form independent legal opinions and repeatedly insisted I pay for outside experts, which led to thousands of dollars in additional costs. On two occasions, he sent me written threats to quit, adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult process. One particularly troubling incident involved a deposition of an out-of-state witness. I strongly objected to granting opposing counsel an extension, as the deposition could have introduced complications that would distract a jury. Despite my objections, Mr. Chalpin agreed to the extension, resulting in more legal fees and further frustration. His professional demeanor was also concerning. A deposition was scheduled at his "office," which turned out to be the dining room table in his townhouse. When I arrived at the agreed time, he answered the door in pajamas and a politically charged T-shirt, claiming he had canceled the meeting via a late-night email I hadn’t seen. His attire and the political messaging on his vehicle were inappropriate and unprofessional. Mr. Chalpin did not demonstrate the assertiveness or litigation experience I expected. Much of his background appears to be in government work, not courtroom advocacy. Shortly before the case settled, he raised his hourly rate from $225 to $325, leaving me little choice but to accept. In total, he billed a figure approaching three times his original estimate. As a former partner at one of the world’s largest accounting firms, I brought him a strong and well organized case. What I received in return was not value, but frustration. In my opinion, Mr. Chalpin was ill-equipped to handle the matter and failed to provide competent representation. If you are looking for a strong advocate in your case, I suggest you look elsewhere. He was more interested in being accommodating and appeasing to opposing counsel than to aggressively prosecute my case.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
