Hired Law firm 2026My case was more complicated than it should've been. I already had a lawyer and paid him in full in advance, but that's because he kept postponing it. Things were not going too good for me as it dragged on, and I lost faith in him. Two weeks before my trial, I decided to hire someone else to represent me, it happened to be Justin Holiman, two and a half weeks before the trial date. After we agreed on a price, he went to work. He did a great job, and even had it dismissed. The only downside of our client/ lawyer relationship was the lack of communication. He wasn't exactly forthcoming with everything I needed to know. He didn't explain things thoroughly and left things unanswered. Being in a situation where you've already spent time in jail before even going to court before a judge can be extremely stressing and frustrating. Although he managed to bring my case to a dismissal, asking him questions about the next step, which was expungement, was like pulling teeth.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
