Attorney Information

Overview

Attorney Nat Carney has devoted his career solely to the practice of criminal defense. He represents clients in all stages of the legal process, from pre-arraignment investigations through trial. He also represents clients in criminal-related civil proceedings and investigations, including before the Sex Offender Registry Board, Board of Bar Overseers, and restraining order proceedings.

Nat grew up in Newton, MA before moving to New Orleans, LA for 10 years. He graduated from Tulane University. During college, he was an intern at the Orleans Public Defender's Office in the client services division and later as an investigator. After college, he worked as a criminal defense investigator, first for the juvenile public defender's office, and later for the Capital Appeals Project in New Orleans. He investigated cases ranging from larceny, burglary, and trespass, to rape, murder, and death penalty defense fact and mitigation investigations. As an investigator, he authored several chapters on death penalty defense investigation for a training manual and presented before the National Defense Investigators Association on interviewing child witnesses, clients, and victims.

Nat graduated from Boston College Law School, magna cum laude, in 2021. In law school, he was part of the Boston College Innocence Clinic and worked on a motion for new trial in a decades-old triple murder arson case. The defendant was released from custody in August 2022 after spending 35 years in prison. As a third-year law student practicing pursuant to SJC Rule 3:03, Nat represented a client accused of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle before a jury of six. His client was quickly acquitted of all charges.

Nat represents clients in the state and federal courts across Massachusetts. He is a member of the Suffolk Lawyers for Justice, where he represents indigent defendants in the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court.

Nat has been recognized for his work. He was named to the Supreme Judicial Court's Pro Bono honor roll for his work in law school. Additionally, along with Attorney J. W. Carney, Jr, he has coauthored chapters in the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education's Massachusetts Evidence: A Courtroom Reference guide.

Nat has a passion for providing zealous representation and ensuring the highest quality of legal services for his clients. His approach is to treat every client's case, no matter how big or small, as the most important one he is handling. His background in investigation allows him to creatively approach every case, develop evidence favorable to the accused, and identify weaknesses in the government's case. In addition, he knows how to develop fact and mitigation evidence early on in a case that might avoid criminal charges altogether, lead to a reduction in the charges, and obtain favorable results for his clients in both the pretrial and trial stages of a case. If you or a loved one are being investigated for or are charged with a crime, call him today.

    Hired Attorney 2024-2025
I am happy to provide this review of Nat Carney as my attorney. I retained Attorney Carney in the fall of 2024, and he provided exceptional service in my defense. I have not had a lot of dealings with attorneys before, so I was pleasantly surprised in working with Nat. First, Nat “knows his stuff“ and helped me understand my situation and the options that I had. However, he did so with compassion and a communication style that I found calming, which I wasn’t expecting from an attorney. Nat clearly cares about his clients, and he worked hard to resolve my case. I was very pleased in how Nat communicated with me. His replies to my questions either in email or by phone were returned quickly and clearly. Additionally, I thought the fee structure was fair, and Nat never tried to run the clock up. My situation was not good, but Nat Carney made the journey a bit less scary, and I am happy with the outcome. I highly recommend Attorney Nat Carney if you need an attorney in this legal space, who is smart, experienced, communicative, and compassionate. Thank you, Nat. Jim
