Hired Attorney 2017-2019I hired Mr. Natoli to assist in divorce proceedings. Though it should have been fairly simple, it was a slog from start to finish. The only part that went correctly was filing the papers. First there was a long wait for a court date (this was pre-COVID). After some sleuthing, it was found out that the court clerk had conflated my file with someone elses with a similar last name. Why Natoli didn't check on this before hand, I'll never know. Finally in court, soon to be ex doesn't show up. We reschedule several more times. I tell Natoli that my partner is planning on leaving the country and we need to move fast on this. Natoli either didn't believe me or didn't care but it ended up happening and we rescheduled several more times. Finally, I think that the judge saw how many times I had been to court without my partner showing up and granted me the divorce and a contempt order. The contempt order was never followed up on by Natoli and expired. When all was said and done, it took two years to get any sort of result from this person. He does not communicate effectively. Several times, I had to do nothing short of harassing him in order to get an answer. He does the bare minimum and is callous and uncaring.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
